Edith and Frank said it well: Ernie was one of the good ones. I was in gym class with him and remember him as a good guy, fair and straigthforward with everyone.
Ernie lived across the street from us on Logan Ave. We were childhood friends and of course went thru grade school and high school together. He and his family were such nice gentle people. I was so glad to see him at our 50th reunion and yelled out his childhood nickname "Butchie!" when I saw him. He was still the nice person I grew up with.
I last saw Ernie at our 50th reunion, so glad he showed up. He was his typical down to earth, friendly and kind to all. I knew Ernie best from running track and playing football with him, I only have one blue ribbon in running the 100 yd. dash, Ernie didn't show up that day. In high school track Ernie pushed me and Dale Nunemaker to be our best. Dale and I would compete for that second place honor, but we could never beat Ernie. I worked with Ernie at the mill for one year and then again we meet in Dallas, Texas in the early 80's. It was always a pleasure to sit down with Ernie and have a beer and talk about old times. Sorry to hear about Ernie's passing. He was always such a great guy and I saw him fairly recently at Menards in Sterling. At least I think it was fairly recently because my time sense is really screwed up by the past couple of years of the pandemic. Anyway it was nice to see him then and to stop for a conversation over building materials.We forget that we are getting (have gotten) older through the years and meeting someone you knew back when reminds us of how time moves on in spite of our best efforts. I appreciated all the comments about Ernie and feel great that he is well remembered. I do not however remember his prowess in the hundred yard dash although im sure he was like lightening fast. Anyway, life carries on and we all have our good thoughts about Ernie and those who have gone on before. RIP Ernie Berkey.
Yes John, Ernie could run. I was usually able to win the first 50 yards but he always passed me in the 2nd 50 yards. And as Joe Mc remembered, we both were always behind him at the end of the 100 yard dash.
I'm sad to hear of Ernie's passing. He was a good, mild mannered person. I remember Mrs. Lafever took her class to the Berkey house to watch the inauguration of John Kennedy. There was a living room packed ful of kids! I saw Ernie from time to time over the years and was always heartened by those chance meetings.
