In Memory

Bob Jubach

Mr. Robert W. Jubach, 74, of Carlsbad, California, and formerly of Ellwood City, passed away on Wednesday, December 6, 2023, in the comfort of his home surrounded by his loved ones.

Born on August 9, 1949, in Ellwood City, to the late Robert L. and Marianne Winterer Jubach, Robert married the former Marcy Hienz in 1970 with whom he celebrated 53 years of marriage.

A 1967 graduate of Dixon High School in Dixon, Illinois, he went on to proudly earn his B.S. in Meteorology from Pennsylvania State University in 1971.

Bob's career took him all around the world. He retired from the Hydrologic Research Center, San Diego, in 2022, serving as the Center's General Manager and Secretary of the Board of Directors. He was a dedicated and respected leader in the fields of hydrometeorology and disaster risk reduction. Before his impactful tenure at HRC, Bob made significant contributions to the International Affairs Office (IAO) of the U.S. National Weather Service (NWS). There, he was instrumental in coordinating the NWS's involvement in the Hurricane Reconstruction Program in Central America and the Caribbean following the devastation of Hurricanes Mitch and Georges. He also served as a staff meteorologist with the U.S. Nuclear Regulatory Commission and as the Manager of the Atmospheric Sciences Department and the Region I Superfund Field Investigation Team office for the Environmental Protection Agency.

He was a proud Penn State alumnus, dedicating many years as President of the Frederick, Maryland, Penn State Alumni Association. His commitment shone brightly as he rarely missed a home game, rain or shine, demonstrating his unwavering team spirit. A lover of nature, Bob celebrated his 40th birthday by climbing Mount Washington in New Hampshire with his wife and, after relocating to San Diego, enjoyed exploring the beaches of Southern California. His affection for animals, particularly dogs and cats, filled his home with warmth and companionship. Bob's diverse passions and adventurous spirit will be greatly missed.

Bob is lovingly remembered by his family: his wife, Marcy; his son, Derek Jubach of Frederick, MD; and his daughter, Meghan Jubach of Marina Del Rey, CA. He also leaves behind his sisters, Chris McDevitt (Mark) of Ellwood City; and Cindy O'Neil (Kevin) of Clearwater, FL.; along with brother-in-law Mark Hienz (Kim); sisters-in-law Andrea Fox, Sue Reese, Janice Jubach, and many beloved nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by his brother, Thomas S. Jubach, DMD., and brother-in-law, Todd Hienz.

In honor of Bob's remarkable life, a Celebration of Life Service will be scheduled at a future date.

I''m so sorry to hear this about Bob. He and I sat next to each other in Robed Choir, and he was just a delightful guy, a good friend and lots of fun.

Bob was a huge Notre Dame football fan when he was in high school. Our senior year Notre Dame and Michigan State played each other for what was essentially the natiional championship on the day of the district choral festival. We and some other guys found a television set in the teacher's lounge, and skipped a rehearsal to watch the game which ended in a controversial tie. Mr. Wiltz, who knew all things, found out and, I don't remember the punishment, but I do remember being a partner in crime with Bob.

His achievements after high school don't surprise me at all. He was an intelligent guy, hard working, but easy going. He will be missed by many.

Bob was a good guy and that is a high compliment and a good friend to everyone.  Thanks to Roger Digges for his memory of Bob.   What an extraordinary career and every evidence of a life well lived.  I know I speak for many of us when I say that I am so proud of the good that our DHS classmates have done and continue to do in the world in big ways and in small.  We are a great class.   I have met many people over the years who didn't like their high school experiences and have no interest in being in touch with classmates.  I find that almost unbelievable, but maybe we were just lucky.  Bob Jubach is an example of a person whose memory is a blessing to family, profession, friends, and classmates.
